Objective & Vision
With the new Spreepark, the capital is regaining a place that expands local recreation and leisure activities by offering the opportunity to experience and discover art and culture in public space. Based on extensive participation and inspired by its past, a public open space will once again be created between Treptower Park and Baumschulenweg for all citizens and guests of the city.
A public park for special experiences in everyday life
The Spreepark is being transformed into a unique park that turns art into an experience in the midst of protected urban nature and is once again becoming a cultural institution in the capital.
New things are being created on the state-owned site, while attractions from the old days such as the Mero-Halle or the Eierhäuschen have been revitalised. With the start of the main construction work, the Spreepark will develop into a driving force for Treptow-Köpenick and the whole of Berlin by 2026.
In designing the Spreepark, planners, architects, engineers and artists are working hand in hand with the Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, the district of Treptow-Köpenick and Grün Berlin from the very beginning. Old buildings and rides become stages for culture and art with a program that provides special experiences in everyday life. The concept developed together with the citizens and the further project development will take place step by step.
Preservation of the historical heritage
Preservation of historical heritage - reinterpretation and transformation
The eventful past of the former amusement park is the basis of the new Spreepark. Rides, architecture and vegetation are largely preserved and saved from decay. With a transformation geared to the future, the new transformation of the Spreepark as a park of a new type begins. The renovation of the Ferris wheel is an example of this claim. In keeping with the redesign of the formerly pure entertainment venue into a modern, environmentally friendly art and culture park for all Berliners, the Ferris wheel is also undergoing a spectacular further development: Large parts of the old construction will be carefully refurbished and reused, but new is the diagonally suspended supporting structure with which the Ferris wheel will float directly above the mirror of the new, 3,000 square meter water basin.
Sustainable and innovative
The environment and sustainability are given special consideration at the Spreepark of the Future. All planning and construction measures as well as the operation of the park are implemented on the basis of a comprehensive sustainability concept with subsequent certification by an independent institute in an exemplary ecological, social and economic manner. As the first public park in Germany, the Spreepark project has received the pre-certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) in platinum. The desired platinum certificate is awarded to construction projects that meet above-average criteria for sustainable implementation.
This also includes an improved connection of the site with modern mobility solutions. Away from the car, towards better accessibility by public transport, by boat, by bike, with e-scooters or even on foot.
